Firefly is allergic to tree nuts

Firefly always has fun shopping at the corner bakery with her mom. Most mornings, they stop for coffee with cream and Firefly’s favorite chocolate milk to go. Sometimes, the bakery offers free donut samples, but Firefly just says, “No thanks!” So many of the treats there are made with nuts, and she’d rather not risk getting sick by eating one. If you or someone you know is allergic to tree nuts like Firefly, always check before eating any of the following foods* that often contain tree nuts:

  • Cereals
  • Crackers
  • Cookies
  • Candy
  • Energy bars
  • Marzipan
  • Frozen desserts
  • Marinades and sauces
  • Pesto
  • Chocolate
  • Flavored coffees
  • Natural baking extracts (such as pure almond extract)

Although tree nuts and peanuts are two different foods and are not actually related, experts advise children who have tree nut allergies to avoid peanuts (and vice versa) because about 30 percent react to both allergens. Tree nuts can also be especially dangerous because they are found in the ingredients of so many products, including lotions and shampoos, bird seed, and other pet foods.

*This list is intended to provide a small sampling of foods that could contain tree nuts or traces of tree nuts. There are many others that may not be mentioned here. Always remember to check labels and/or inquire about how foods have been prepared.
