Butterfly is allergic to shellfish

The beach is a great place to build sand castles and being there is one of Butterfly’s best memories of summertime. Foods like crab, lobster, shrimp, and other types of shellfish come from the sea, but should never be eaten by Butterfly. If you or someone you know is allergic to shellfish like Butterfly, always check before eating any of the following foods* that often contain, or belong within the category of shellfish:

  • Crab
  • Squid
  • Clams
  • Shrimp
  • Escargot (snail)
  • Mussels
  • Scampi
  • Scallops
  • Asian food
  • Abalone
  • Lobster
  • Calamari
  • Conch
  • Prawns
  • Quahog
  • Oysters
  • Crawfish
  • Caesar salad dressing

Unlike fish, if a person is allergic to shellfish, they usually must avoid all types of shellfish, as most types will cause an allergic reaction. Many restaurants prepare shellfish in the same cooking area as other foods, so it’s always important to inform the wait staff and chef about shellfish allergies. Luckily there are not many foods where shellfish is a hidden ingredient, but Butterfly always remembers to read the labels just in case.

*This list is intended to provide a small sampling of foods that are considered or could contain shellfish. There are many others that may not be mentioned here. Always remember to check labels and/or inquire about how foods have been prepared.
